The Role of magazines
Magazines play an important role in the present conscious society. Some of their roles are given below:
  • They cover diverse topics such as politics, law, society, women, the arts, travel, fashion, health, sports, and economy.
  • During the past two decades, magazines have been able to capture the imaginations of millions of middle –income people as well as the rich segments of Indian society.
  • They have also informed the masses about the latest developments in various fields.
  • They have also succeeded in creating a wave of elite thoughts in the minds of the bourgeoisie and super rich people of our society.
  •  These magazines inform, motivate, and entertain their readers. Nevertheless readers do not jump out of their homes to act on the thoughts given in these magazines.
  • They form opinions about the people, subjects, or events that are described in these magazines. People imbibe the data and facts given in magazine and store these for future reference. Later, they act upon these data and take decisions according to the situations they are made to face.
  • Magazines have also succeeded in changing the political ideologies of many a reader.
  • On the economic front, magazines can only give opinions. They do not control the Finance Ministry or Union Government . They give rational view about our economy, however, they cannot force the Government  to charge its financial or economic policies.
  • The magazines covers latest news and event related to arts, music, sports, literature, cinema, society, and global polity.
  • They fed the hungry elite minds of India with facts, data, and unique opinions. People read these articles and features and gain new insight though these topics and affairs. Therefore, magazines of India give high-quality information and views on such topics.
  • They develop their readers without forcing them to accept such views. Thus, they act in a truly democratic manner and inform, motivate and change the opinions of their readers.

THE BOOK PHASE
During the eighties, magazines were published in A4 Format. But this format became unusual by the arrival of md-eighties. Book phase refers to printing of magazines in small sizes such as 4.5 inches x 7.5 inches and 6.0 inches x 8.0 inches. Later, only the small size (4.5 inches x 7.5 inches) was accepted by many magazines. “The Illustrated Weekly of India” was published in the newspaper size. Its size was charged to 6.0 Inches x 10.0 Inches (print area). Other magazines also opted for the small format. During this phase the number of pages increased, and the printing process as well as binding procedures became simple. However, some magazines like India toady , outlook, frontline etc. continued to be published in there standard format (print area). The book phase versions of a magazine are cheaper because the cost of papers is less. However, information is not adequate because of the restriction on the extent (number of pages). General Knowledge Toady is being published in the 4.5 Inches x 7.5 Inches size.

Contemporary situation
In the new millennium, magazines of A4 and foolscap size as well as book–phase magazines are doing extremely well in the Indian markets. These are a symbol of status, knowledge, and responsibility of the Press towards the current political, social and economic conditions of India. These also mirror the current global political scenario. News of the international economy, wars, terrorism, minor battles, and societal movements are also covered by these magazines. They have come of age. They have also become the tools for data collection and decision making (in the national context). They help their leaders become enlightened, mentally powerful and rational.

Small newspapers (problems and prospects)
National and reputed newspapers stand on the basis of strong network, costly ads and popularity. But small newspapers are not able to form a strong network. They face many problems in continuing themselves. Such newspapers have limited circulation. These are local or regional newspapers and have limited number of readers. They cover local news, national political events, sports, travel, arts and crafts, local time tables, and fairs and festivals. Due to their limited circulation, these are unable to get advertisements form reputed corporate firms, MNCs and foreign firms. As such, their revenues do not touch decent levels to enable them to think big. Language is another problem; most of the small newspapers are published in local or regional languages or dialects. In addition, it is not possible for them to shift to a major language like Hindi or English. The quality of printing is also poor. Many newspapers of this category have started using imported offset Presses to print their products. Still, they have a long way to go. Their future is Moderately bright only in their respective regions. They  are not likely to become state-level or national –level newspapers. The quality of editorials, articles and features of such newspapers is doubtful. Reputed authors and feature writers do not support them because of their inability to pay good remuneration to these authors and writers. Most of these newspapers are published in black-and-white, thought some of these have come out with color editions (or supplements) as well. These newspapers are cheap and easily available in their respective regions. Many of them are also being circulated in the major cities of India. We have seen some south Indian magazines in the bookstalls of Delhi.
